Bringing empty properties back into use

It’s great to see that a number of housing associations are seeing the benefits of bringing empty properties back in to use. I for one love old houses. Yes, they may cost more to maintain, however you cannot take away the character and solid structures of these properties.

A big push to bring empty properties back into use

bringing empty properties back into useSo why is there now a big push to bring empty properties back into use? Well, the UK still isn’t building enough homes. From a basic economics point of view demand for homes is currently outstripping supply. Affordability is key. Even though the economy appears to be heading in the right direction wages will simply not keep up with being able to buy a house. So you need to make sure there are policies in place to ensure affordable homes are made available.

Affordable homes to buy and rent for a sustainable housing market

You need to have affordable homes. You need homes that are affordable to both rent and buy. Why? Well those striving to get on the property ladder need to be able to save for a deposit. The only way they can do this is to prolong their stay in the family home or find somewhere to rent that allows them to have the freedom of being in their own home. Having somewhere affordable to rent  as allows them to save for a deposit.

So when they are ready to buy they will need to be able to buy one they can afford! If we don’t have an affordable home model in the UK the housing market will slow down considerably. That’s not to say I expect everyone to want to buy a home. It may not be right for everyone, but you need to at least give people the choice if they want to buy.

A Liverpool partnership to build new affordable homes and bring back into use empty properties

That’s why it was great to see this news article. A partnership in Liverpool to develop new affordable homes for people to buy as well as bringing empty properties back into use! I am a big fan of these older properties. We should try to save as many of them as we can.
