Positive start to the new year for Rochdale homelessness charity

M&Y Maintenance and Construction has pledged to help refurbish the Petrus Community Hub, a homelessness centre based in Rochdale.

Petrus Hub offers a range of essential day support services to vulnerable people, where those who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless can access advice and support, along with more practical help such as shower and laundry facilities and a daily breakfast.

Gill Kelly, managing director of M&Y Maintenance and Construction, recently visited Petrus and said: “The work that I saw Petrus undertaking was exceptional. The quality of the services they offer and the impact that they make to the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our society was astonishing. I came away wanting to do something to support their work.”

When Gill heard of planned refurbishment work due to take place this year, she offered the services of M&Y Maintenance and Construction completely free of charge. M&Y will provide the labour, with their trusted partners supporting the project and providing materials.

M&Y operatives will fully refurbish four rooms in total, including a shower and bath room. The work is expected to start early next month, and will take around three weeks to complete. This is the first of many projects, with M&Y committing to support Petrus in the future.

Denis Skelton, Coordinator for Petrus, said: “Petrus Hub supports up to 100 vulnerable adults every week, and the services we provide help people to stay in their homes or to find accommodation. The refurbishments we had planned for this year were necessary but costly, so the fact that M&Y Maintenance and Construction has offered to carry out this work free of charge is fantastic. It means that we can put more money into keeping people off the streets.”
