Council Tax Moving House, How Do I Go About It?

Changing council tax when moving house is an important task as highlighted on our interactive moving house checklist. Having moved many different times over the years I’ve learnt how important it is to have the right tasks on my checklist and ticked off before moving house.

Do I need to tell the Council when I am moving house?

Yes. It doesn’t matter if you are moving down the road or to another county you will need to inform them otherwise you may get billed for two council tax bills which you won’t want to do. Whilst you will probably manage to sort this out after you have moved it’s a hassle to follow up and claim any additional money back.

If you are moving to another area you will need to find out who your new council will be. So once you know for definite when you are moving it’s best to get in touch with the council to start the ball rolling so they are aware of any changes to council tax payments.

Depending on the council you may be able to change your address online. Either way when you have found your local council get in touch with them to find out the process you need to follow.

Change in circumstances when moving house?

For example, if you were living with someone and now going to be living on your own that may also affect the amount of council tax you pay when you have moved house. Likewise, if you are moving from living alone to sharing a property that could affect your payments too.

What happens if I don’t tell the Council when I am moving house?

As explained above, you will have the hassle of following this up after your move. This can take up a lot of time and effort.
